Bridge 1: Design Intervention – Caroline Galderisi

Research on Julissa Norman

  1. THE JAM! Where did the idea stem from?

Going through the process of transforming one of Julissa’s objects started with the question “What do you want to change?” and “If you had more time, what would you do.”

I looked into her routine, and how to make it more enjoyable. She mentioned some aspects of her routine she enjoys such as skincare and seeing friends. She also mentioned some things she loves and wanted to do more, including playing her electric guitar.

This stood out to me because through a small investigation, she explained that she is a Metal Head and that pursuing music is her plan B in life. If music is THIS important to her I wanted to find a way to include it into her routine more, since she would play about once a week and sing a little each day. I first came up with the idea to make a band poster, album cover, and merch that could inspire her, but what if she had a band or more people to play with? I then came up with an app that she could find musicians with similar interests!

  1. Description of the app; THE JAM!

When portraying the app, I felt as if a design of each page online would be stronger than a sketch, since it would be tailored to technology and can be shown in a more real-world manner. I described the app as “Tinder or Bumble for Musicians” when explaining it to Julissa, but that is just the first layer to it. You can find People to play, record, and collab with as well as finding venues, and discovering new songs.

  1. How does this tie into Julissa’s life?

This app can help Julissa get motivated to play more because as she said, it would be more fun to play with others. She can now find people with a similar taste in music and discover up and coming musicians. Julissa’s relationship with music is prominent, and it varies as well.

Her favorite songs at the moment are:

Women – Angel Olsen

The Agency – Alvvays

Nothing’s gonna hurt you baby – Cigarettes After Sex

Always Forever – Cults

Cocaine Jesus – Rainbow Kitten Suprise

New Jacket – Literature

I found this interesting because none of these songs are true ‘metal’, which leads me to believe she’d benefit even more from this app with a varied music taste.
