Bridge 2 – Trader Joe’s Part 1

Observations:

As soon as you enter the shop you already get the sense of entering a shop by just the double automated doors. A lot of people passing by to shop, so many people are moving around but unlike the bookshop, people are actually here to buy. People don’t visit just to look around and see if you buy something nice. People know what they are buying before entering the shop. Which makes it two different paces of people. One that collects the items as soon as possible to leave the shop or others that takes their time and walks slowly taking a look at the other items which she wasn’t thinking to buy it before. For a small shop, there were equally amount of customers in the wait line as in the shop that is still browsing.

Shop divides the area by 6 iels and leaving enough sidewalks for customers to pass. It’s perfectly built efficiently use the space. Near the entrance, next to it the register takes place. With the maximum amount of 24 registers, the shop manages to serve high demand.

Interviews

One of the interviews is with the shop employee that works in the register. He thinks that the current system is the most efficient system they could run in such a small space. Customers are being lined up around the whole shop in order to get in line during busy hours. One of the other things I asked was about the self service checkouts. He replied: “Self-service checkouts are great. They are fast, efficient and requires less employee to work but currently we don’t have enough space to run such a system like that.”

The other interview was with a customer recently buying groceries. First questions I asked, “why was this shop to buy groceries at?” And he said: “Location is the biggest factor, the shop is located between subway stop and my house so it makes it easier for me to buy from here”. As we asked him about the waiting line he said it is quite long but it doesn’t really take that long to finish the line.

Rian:

One of the customers said she comes here about every week because it is easy to get organic food cheaper in trader joe’s and also this location is convenient for her. she also told me this place is clouded especially today but she still comes here because she likes to get fresh organic food.

One of the workers at trader joe’s said this place get super clouded that they need to use some of the workers to make people in line and organize the flow of people. He said the place is sometimes too small that the line for the cashier goes between several counters.
