LP Post No.5- “What is fashion?”

Since the beginning of the semester, my definition of fashion has not changed. I’ve learned it can mean a lot of things but for me, fashion typically refers to popular trends. Fashion is somewhat like a category of ice cream that contains many flavors. Some of its flavors being clothing, accessories (shoes, sunglasses, jewelry), make up styles, behaviors (gender, manners, actions), history and more. Not much has changed about my prior definition for fashion besides widening my knowledge of the word.

An example within the readings that discusses fashion trends of clothing, behavior (gender, manners, actions) and historical significance would be, “… where fashion is experienced by the individual as a source of anxiety. …of the multiple overlapping roles women are called upon to assume. In choosing what to wear, they are faced with many possibilities, which may range from being chic, sexy or funky, …such as being middle-aged, a grandmother and not having the body she used to have” (Sophie Woodward, Why Women Wear What They Wear, Berg, 2007, page 32). This discusses mannerisms of popular trends regarding women. It discusses their past and current social norms of what is and isn’t appropriate to wear and how women are just by their fashions.

An example of fashion regarding accessories would be the evolution of fashion within the clothing industry in general. It changes year by year. For example, the “poor boy hat” came into style in 2017-2018 but now is out of fashions again. Clothing, accessories, behaviors and more go through different mediums at different times during different periods of the year.
