Childhood Space – Polente

Polente

The space from my childhood that I chose is this hill by the sea where there is a lighthouse which is called Polente and several wind turbines. It holds a special place in my childhood because this specific space is located in my hometown that is the Tenedos Island. We would always (still do) go there to watch the sunset and have a picnic any chance we get.

However, even though the city is well known for its sustainable lifestyle, lately there has been a huge tourist attraction because of movies that have been shot on the island. So every summer season the hill is so crowded during the sunset and the people are not behaving responsibly towards their waste and you see a lot of bottles and plastic glasses on the ground while you leave the area.

For my project the inspiration for the technique came from the topography maps. The idea was to build the hill by the sea from my imagination like a topography map so that you would see every layer and get a sense of what it actually looks like geographically.

I used film boards and cut them according to the shape of the hill and the rocks, making them smaller step by step towards the top. I used patafix to put them together. I used paper for the lighthouse and the wind turbine. I decided to paint the sea area blue and leave the rest black because even though the island preserves its natural beauty still, during summer season the environment doesn’t feel the same as it used to be when I was a child due to extreme waste from tourists.
