The Female Persona

-The Female Persona-

The idea behind this project is to show the male gaze concept in western cinema. What I want to portray is showing the irony between the gender roles in films and how it would look like if the roles were reversed. Therefore, I chose 4 iconic film stills that I thought portrayed the male gaze perfectly and in the end I’m going to take staged photographs of these film stills and try to make the atmosphere look as similar as possible to the original ones.

Here is my process:

Film stills that I chose:

  • Malena (2000) – Guiseppe Tornatore
  • Malena (2000) – Guiseppe Tornatore
  • The Graduate (1967) – Mike Nichols
  • American Beauty (1999) – Sam Mendes

Sketches

Prototype 1                                                                                Prototype 2

Advanced Prototype 1                                                                                       Advanced Prototype 2

Draft Still 1                                                                                                 Draft Still 2

-Feedback-

The feedback I got was about making the photographs look more like a film still so that it looks more like screen and the audience feels like they are in a movie theatre. They said I should choose one aspect ratio for each still and display them in a linear way. They thought it would be good to play with the depth of each photo depending on the actual film stills so that the audience can understand who and what is the focus.

Final Project

I displayed the work on a black background, with all the photos placed next to each other according to their color combinations. This display meant to correspond to the context and the starting point of this project which is cinema, and meant to remind the audience of a film roll.
