Space & Materiality – Assignment #10 – Orthographic Projection of Household Object

Description:

We were tasked with taking a household object and creating an orthographic projection of it. Moreover, the objectives of this assignment were to “learn to describe or provide detailed specifications for a 3D object as well as to learn how to use multiple views of a 3D object.”

An orthographic projection is a method used by 3D based designers to communicate with factories in an effective and technical manner. No other forms of communication would be used, therefore, it is important that the orthographic projection contains all the relevant information (such as dimensions, layers, faces, etc.) so that the end product would come out exactly as how the designer planned it to be.

Process:

For this assignment, I chose to create an orthographic projection of a qahwa cup (Arabic coffee cup). An image of the item and its various faces can be seen below.

After choosing the object, I went an used a ruler to measure all of its elements (height, width, etc.) I then began drawing the orthographic projection.

After completing the orthographic drawing and bringing it to class, three major critiques were brought up. The first was that the titles of each face were titled and therefore I should straighten them out. The second was that the dimensions on the left column were not lined up correctly (from largest on the outside to smallest on the inside). The last critique was that the descriptive information (title, name, etc.) were not surrounded by a box.

Once I got home, I rectified all of these issues and you can see the final Drawing Below.

Reflection:

Two aspects of this assignment that pushed me to reflect was the amount of time it took to complete and the delicate nature of the tracing paper. Firstly, I did not initially realize how much time it would take to complete one drawing as it has to be precise and neat. I enjoyed that aspect because I am more of a detail-oriented person, however, I know better now to allow more time similar projects. Secondly, the delicate nature of the tracing paper proved to be an obstacle as I ripped it on a few occasions, which made me redraw the projection. Proving to be quite annoying, I had to rethink about how much pressure I was applying and become more gentle. I never had to really think about this before but I started to notice that I apply a lot of pressure in other contexts as well; when typing, walking, etc. A lot of my physical contact with my surroundings can be quite heavy. It has not been an issue, and I refrain from thinking of it as one, however, it may be something I want to think about in the future.
