Summer 2021 – Getting to Know Materials – Carving

For this week I wanted to work with fruit, specifically apples as I know them to be perfect for carving, and how I could carve into it. Faces are something that I love to do and I believe suit the natural rounded shape of the fruit itself.

The process of the piece entailed carving into the apple in layers with the details protruding most (i.e nose or eyebrow bridge) being the top most layer and areas with holes such as the eyes, mouth, or nose holes being the lowest most layer.

One of the most notable moments of carving into the apple is that the deeper the holes, the more brown they become; this helps in adding depth to the work.

Materials:

  1. Apples
  2. Work Mat
  3. Disposable Container
  4. X-acto Knife
  5. Pen
  6. Q-tip

A peer of mine mentioned playing with time and the process of decomposition with the piece as it is fruit. I thought this idea was fascinating. I will be continuing to show the progression of the sculpture and how it deteriorates every day after its completion.
