Inhabited Space Assignment

Inhabited Space Assignment

Design Drawings:

process: My initial plan for this piece was to make something that could stand up by itself, on the ground. I had no intention of making a swing like the design I created but someone presented the idea to me in a zoom class and I loved the obstacles/challenges that it presented and I really wanted to be able to execute something ambitious. Although I kept a similarly shaped design I did adapt it a bit for the paper model/final.

Paper Model:

process: This was the paper model that I build of a revised design, now made to be a hanging structure. Here I included pictures of it with its covering and without it.

Acquiring Materials/Construction Process:

Conclusion: The construction of this piece could not have been met with less problems. Although the making of the piece itself was very involved and required a lot of steps this swing in its final form did not break once. Of course, if I were going to redo it I would change things here and there, for example, once I sat in the piece the first time, the holes that I had made in the seat to hang it ripped a bit when they were adjusting to my weight and I’d have liked to clean that up as they were once nicely hemmed but now I can make these distinctions the next time that I try something like this. Ultimately it served its purpose though and I was very pleased with that. It could cut me off from the outside world, it compressed down, and it was durable/held my weight, I couldn’t ask it for much more. I learned so much from this project, especially in terms of resourcefulness and I hope to re-try making this swing again sometime soon.
