2: Material Matters

    • How did remaking your object in a new material change your perspective and meaning of the object?
  •  – Well for one it really made me step back and take a look at what purpose a shoe is supposed to serve. With the shoe I chose to re-build, often times the functionality is overlooked because many times a Jordan fan doesn’t choose to wear a Jordan because they protect your feet more than a hiking boot would per-say but because they are a Jordan. There is an interesting relationship set up here between the brand and the buyer that I was forced to dismiss in order to re-make this shoe. This was something I had never considered prior.
    • What did you enjoy?
  •  – I really enjoyed playing with the idea of a shoe, and what that could really be. The thought of making something entirely dysfunctional was silly to me and I enjoyed the entire process of making a shoe into a conceptual piece of art.
    • What was challenging? And how did you overcome these challenges?
  •  –It was difficult for me to figure out what I was actually trying to say about the essence of the shoe with the piece I was making. I had a hard time bridging that gap because I couldn’t figure out which part was informing which. Eventually, I was able to find a sort of middle ground and have them inform each other’s development but I think there is still a part of me left after this assignment wondering what I was really striving to accomplish.
    • Based on the feedback, what would you do next? Or what would you change?
  •  – I’d honestly probably do this assignment entirely different if I were to do it again, but it’s hard to say what I’d change without going back and entirely re-format my idea. I think a good place to start would be pinning down exactly what I was trying to say with the final work from the beginning.
    • What other projects inspired you and why?
    • – I really loved Jude’s final piece although I was also a little unclear about the purpose of her project. I think she really captured the essence of her object and she did it technically well, as well.
