Union Square Trip Observations

Union Square Observations

Some initial thoughts and questions.

The best buy store on 14th street is an iconic building due to the interesting wall art installed on the front facade of the stores north facing wall. Upon first glance this instillation/wall art made me think of multiple things. What is that plant like center piece? Is it a plant or is it the sun radiating its warmth and positivity to all of best buys customers. If its made to be interpreted as positive and bright, why make the background a dark brown? Also, what is the stone like object in the lower left corner? What does it all resemble? My first thoughts were everything to do with its design and its implementation. But then I began to think of why it was there in the first place. Who decided this building should have decorations while all of its surroundings were bland and corporate seeming. Was the intention to make the building standout and attract attention?

Simultaneous Perception.

I observed the best buy store and its wall art completely aware of the fact that I was supposed to be observing and noticing the environment around me and how it impacted my state of now and then. All factors influence ones perception of an object and shape their overall experience. Your state of consciousness, sensory input and surroundings all contribute to how a memory of something is stored. Rarely do we notice the detail and complexity of the thousands of things we interact with daily. While viewing the best buy store wall I tried honing my thoughts and observations into two different aspects of the experience. The first, dealing with the observation of the wall itself; the design of the wall and what it might represent. The second, the people, noises, smells and feeling around me. Simultaneously aware of how I perceive one another to influence my experience and ultimately my opinion on the wall.
