Divided + Cubed Process Documentation

Divided + Cubed

This project was exceptionally new for me. As someone who has little experience in plaster, word working and acrylic bonding I found it a challenge to learn the skills required to successfully execute the piece. My idea behind the relationship between the individual nine cube sections (how they interlock and take up space) was to create a range in mass and perceived volume. The first nine cube section was created in plaster, a dense stone like material that has a very dense perceived volume. The second nine cube section is wood that appears granule, with horizontal and vertical lines indicating a slightly less dense and voided perceived volume. The third nine cube section is laser cut acrylic that is completely transparent, expressing a completely translucent and empty perceived volume. The final piece’s success is up to interpretation however, I am happy with the end result and enjoyed the process from sketch and theory to model making and physical building.

Below is a gallery demonstating my creative process from concept to design to building.
