Learning Portfolio Post #1

The first aphorism I chose from Christopher Breward is speaking about how each piece of clothing in fashion has a story, meaning, and history behind it. Just like how we study American or world history, there is an explanation and timeline for each event taken. Ancient artifacts are studied and examined and are thought of highly by architects just like how fashion and crafted garments are thought of highly by designers and fashion followers. I agree with this statement after I learned about fashion history last semester. Before, I used to only look at a garment and have an opinion of if I liked it or not, but after learning about the stories, meanings, and how much work and effort went into each piece, I have found a new respect for each piece of clothing and its attention to detail.

The second aphorism I chose from Christopher Breward speaks about how fashion needs to be defined instead of it being definite itself. Many people believe that fashion is an industry is similar to a popularity contest. It is what is on trend and what the public wants to see from marketing with famous celebrities or what is unique but not too unique where the public may perceive it as odd. I do agree that shoppers may define what they believe is wearable and what is not to the mass, but I do disagree that fashion needs to be defined as a statement. I believe there are many pieces that is a statement and enough on its own. It is like a piece of wearable art that the shopper is investing in and showcasing to the world for the designer. I believe that fashion is a form of self-expression and a story is told by itself even before a person is in it.
