“New Gods” February 14th update – Core Studio/Seminar 3D

I’ve completed disassociation and mercurialness this week as well as the framework for the final sculpture. I also bought the supplies for the diorama and some LED lights + gels for photographing the pieces. Honestly, I’ve been having so much fun with this project (minus the fact that I’m killing my neck by doing each sculpture in one sitting for like eight hours just looking down and hunched over the piece haha) I’m a little sad to say goodbye to the work. This week I’ll be staining all the bases of the completed pieces, gluing on the eyelashes for the pieces that need it, and starting the construction of the diorama. I’m thinking about adding hair to the perfectionism sculpture but I’ll feel it out when I’m sculpting it this week.

I placed dowels as the attachment for the face of disassociation but I ended up ripping them out when I attached it because I didn’t like the angle. I decided to superglue the top of the face to the top of the head and inserted halved toothpicks as the support. I’m super happy with the look of the “skin” pulls, they’re rather grotesque looking in a good way. I also really love the details of the mouth I was able to achieve, making teeth is really annoying and I wasn’t sure if they would stay as they dried but luckily they didn’t crack.

Mercuiralness was probably the one that gave me the least amount of issues. Honestly, the only challenge was working against the clock since the clay tubes started to dry out and crack if I didn’t move quick enough. This clay dries surprisingly fast so it’s a bit annoying to work in that regard but overall not too bad since I’ll spray the piece every half hour or so when I’m working.
