Bridge two project

Fear is a feeling that we—as human beings—all have in common. One’s fear might various from others, for instance, some people might be afraid of darkness while some are afraid of brightness. Fear itself, to be honest, is an unexplainable thing. We may be afraid of something since our early age, but we don’t know specifically why we are afraid, or we experience something that hurt us which leads to fear.

By interviewing my partner Nancy, I found out that her fear was very much different than mine. “ To be honest, I am afraid of fire. I get this fear since I was very young. When I first time got hurt by fire at the age of five.” Calculating the time, Nancy has been having the fear for little more than 13 years. When I asked her if she has anyone in the family who also has the same fear, she said: “My parents are not afraid of that. Even though my mom has the fear since she was little, she got over it when becoming a mother.” Clearly, Nancy got her fear from her own experience.

Thinking about her and her fear, I decided to do a piece of wearable dress as my project for my studio class. The prompt of the project is to make a wearable piece that protects your partner from his or her fear. The original thought was to make this piece flowing, like the water shape, by using special materials. The only problem is that this would take me hours and hours to do experimenting and it is really time consuming. So I changed my mind because of the time limitation. Instead of using the fabrics and the shape as the focus, I decided to use balloons. I wanted to use wires as the holder support, and put a really thin layers of white paper underneath. The paper should be light enough that can easily shape. On the surface, putting many balloons that filled up with water. My thought is to make a video which focus on the body movement where the person moves or shakes her body, the sharp point of the wire should be able to prick the balloons and let the water out. The moment of the water spill is my main focus. If this video turned out to be what I have imagined, it should creating a somewhat abstract “water-surrounded” art which indicating that the person is protected from her fear.
