Time: Cinemagraph

I make a cinemagraph of a cup of matcha latte on my desk. This cinemagraph illustrate a busy afternoon. The drink in the teacup continuously rotating in a clockwise direction. I choose this scene because time seems to be longer and pass slower when doing things that are boring. When I was writing papers or doing something on my computer with a cup of tea in front of me, I always unconsciously stare at the teacup and this diverts my attention from what I should be working on. I want the viewer to have the same experience when looking at this cinemagraph. People tend to focus on the teacup when looking at it.

In this cinemagraph, I want the people to experience the time. Time is combined with people’s feeling. A second can be both short and infinite. This cinemagraph seems short, but when you look at it again and again, you feel a longer period of time.

This clip is chosen from the Chinese movie Farewell My Concubine. In the past, people learning opera performance would be flogged by their mentor if they made any mistakes. This scene talks about a 7-year-old kid commits suicide because he doesn’t want to be punished by his mentor.
