Unraveling A Runway

On the side of the cat walks are two roll of ice cubes with flowers frozen with in. Sections of the cat walk is wet due to the melting ice cubes. Models are dressed in designs with simple silhouette and subtle colours. Some outfits are with floral prints, but the majority of outfits are in black, white and mustard yellow. Most models either have a black or yellow veil tied around their eyes almost like a death veil. Numerous looks within the collection consist of bubble sleeves, ruffles and lace. The collection is modest with length of the dresses no higher than knees, which most lengths come to the ankle. The fabrics the designer uses are light and soft with a little of shimmer.

Questions:

  1. What is the purpose of displaying blocks of ice cube with flowers frozen within on the sides of the catwalk?
  2. Is there a specific reason for the veil? If so, what is it?
  3. Why did the designer choose to open the show with pure white outfits and close it with black outfits?

The runway incorporates many aspects and elements from the Victorian era including the puff sleeves, tulle veil lace and beading as well as floral prints and colour palette that consists different shades of mustard yellow and green. The heels of the shoes are short and blocky which is possibly inspired by the Victorian era’s furnitures. Presumably, the veil is a reference from funeral wear during the Victorian era. The Victorian era represented a peaceful, prosperous time for the United Kingdom which is why the designer decided to open the show with a pure white T-shirt ,shorts, and iconic black Victorian lace to emphasize the purity, a fresh start. Towards the end of the show, garments shift from colours to all black; in all likelihoods symbolizes the death of Queen Victoria and coming to the end of a glorious era. Perhaps the designer is trying to deliver the message of the passage of time. The melting ice cubes on sides of the runway strengthen the message of everything thing will eventually comes to an end. Even a frozen cube of ice. Time will slowly transform everything. Time will never be frozen.
