Into to Fashion- Post 1

“Fashion is gossip. Never underestimate the power of gossip. Semiologists are driven into ecstasies of supposition by its whisper”

Fashion has a language of its own. Through our ways of dressing, we are signalling and communication with one another. Semiologists are amused by its system.

Fashion is visual communication. We establish our initial assumptions and impressions accordingly to people’s apparel and appearances. We are able to determine many things through a person’s clothing. For instance, if a girl is wearing pleated mini skirt, thigh-high socks, shirt with bow tie around the neck and a little black side body bag, I would assume this girl is into preppy style who possibly enjoys Japanese music or manga and follows Haraju fashion. Her clothing shows she enjoys being cute, sweet and girly. This girl signals all these messages to the viewers around her and people with similar interests in Japanese culture or fashion would approach and gather around her.

“Fashion does not define. It is instead a term that demands definition.”

Fashion is so intimate and personal that changes its definition from person to person. It is merely an abstract concept we are referring to.

Fashion can be defined personally but cannot be defined on an universal understanding. It is a broad and vague concept that includes so many aspects of things. Everybody has a different understanding of fashion, its purposes, necessity and value. Fashion is a feeling, a mood and is extremely personal. Fashion is like the concept of right and wrong. There is no absolute correct or incorrect answer in this world. It is so subjective and everyone has a different point of view.
