Artist Statement:
Coming from a background where superstitious traditional beliefs have been involved with my culture, I wanted to work on the topic of Turkish superstition corresponding to my Seminar essay. I wanted to research a subject that would allow me to explore the knowledge of my fellow Turkish friends and family to see if they know as much as I do on the superstitious Turkish festival: Hidirellez.
In relation to my Seminar essay answering the question: “How Important Are Turkish Superstitions to Turkish Culture and Are They Accepted by Women Specifically?“, I used the festival of Hidirellez day as another example of a superstitious belief in Turkey. As a subject of research, I also wanted to figure out if women (in accordance to the interviewed people’s knowledge) were more involved with this holiday or not. The documentary analyses what people know about this holiday, what they do specifically, and where they have heard about it. Finally, wether men or women are more involved with this holiday was explored in the form of interviews, visual images and videos.
