MYTH project 4

It took me forever to figure out what fairytale or myth I wanted to work with. I love those stories and I’ve been learning about them for years now, so the options were endless. I felt like this was finally my chance to make something magnificent because of the chance I was being given so I got overwhelmed by my options. After seminar on Friday, Maya said she wanted it to be the same story for both classes. The story we have to write for seminar must be contemporary which is the complete opposite of me and so in choosing the myth/fairytale I had to be extra careful so I could work it into a contemporary setting without too much difficulty. Back to the studio assignment, I did know that I want to use photography as it is my major and I have recently felt like I’ve been neglecting it. I also knew the style I wanted it in so I made a mood board of photos from some of my favorite photographers including Jamie Beck, Bella Kotak. Jamie Beck even had a couple of pieces she did that perfectly fit this assignment like snow white and the evil queen which represent France VS New York City, or the last supper full of different versions of her. So, I took inspiration from her approach. I made a plan for the 3 weeks that we have to work on the project. I had planned to go to the Met next Wednesday to get inspo for poses from the statues, but I ended up going earlier for another class and took my pictures then and made a collage of them.

As seen above in the notebook, my three week plan starts with the first Wednesday,

APRIL 11th – go to thrift and antique shops to look for props [I also made a list of some nearby to go to]

13th-15th – taking the self portraits at home

APRIL 18th – edit the photos and then from this and into the next week is designated for reshoots and printing.

Finally, I have chosen to do The Twelve Dancing Princesses by The Brothers Grimm. I was obsessed with the Barbie retelling movie of it when I was younger, I knew all the words and even had a birthday themed after it.  I plan to do 12 self portraits, one for each princess, and print them all out on a large format.
