Semester 1 Deconstruction

SEMESTER 1 DECONSTRUCTION: First semester Integrative Studio 1: Fake’s Dream project 3.

For project this my class came together in groups of three to share our dreams from a dream journal we had to have been keeping and solidify them into ideas that we could interpret for a video project. We started out with a class activity to see the kind of role we would play within our groups. I obtained the position of “driver” and helped lead or ideas and process. We then started listing out our concept ideas based on my documented dreams (my team members couldn’t remember their dreams so we based them primarily off of mine).

We listed out ‘light’ verses ‘dark’ themes and elements that could be used in translating that feeling onto the screen. We took the unsteady/unruly feeling of dream sequences and mapped out a flow that could be used while editing it. We also listed visual inspirations, like film directors, to look to that fit the concept we had settled on. We didn’t story board because we wanted to see how unruly it would come out during editing, to make it kind of feel like a raw dream, you don’t know what would happen next. Dreams aren’t something that is structured and we wanted it to feel that way. Based on the theme list we first made, a shot list was produced from so that we could get relevant content to the theme of light.

We split up from the group format to shoot our content, this way we could try our individual styles. Once we reconvened we assessed our footage together, made cuts, and started editing our film which was titled Reverie.
