Project 2: Talking Pictures Processes

Integrative Seminar: Project 2

Here are my processes and reflection of the project “Talking Pictures”.

For the whole project, we have to experience how to use the racer graphic printer, and train our skills of finding and creating poems. Our group used racer graphic printer to print our cover, and the normal paper for the inside pages. The threads are used for connecting the elements in our artist book. We did try to stick our elements on the paper but it doesn’t work that well so we changed our ideas to hanging the elements together. We also tried to use different types of paper to fold our photos before we get to our final decisions.

For finding the poem, Susan and I bought a poem book from a bookstore and we cut out sentences out of the poem written by poets, we found some lines in the poems that fit for our photos, we made the sentences and lines look like as if Susan and I are communicating, I think it is very interesting. But before this, we also trained to find poems by ourselves, I cut our words from magazines and piece them together to form my own poem.

I was grouped with Susan and we decided to show our feelings and understandings toward “Life”, we hand made the final work and it is an artist book, we decided to hang the pictures and poems we sent to each other in order to make it look like road guides that leads people’s directions, but before that, we just simply stick them on the paper, and soon we found that it is not interesting and it does not speak out for our theme.

After we finished presenting our project to the whole class, we answered few questions and got feedbacks from our classmates. I also think that I can improve my artist book for the project “Talking Pictures” by listening and reflection after the presentation, and here are the points that I listed for improvements;

1. Clearer connections can be made between photos we sent because our group folded the photos printed out, which the connections between them are poorer than what we thought.

2. Improvement of colours. Why are we using grey and orange? Is is about our feelings towards life? How should we explain it and what do the colours help in this theme we chose?

3. Easier to open. The threads for hanging the photos can be easily twined together, and therefore makes it(artist book) harder to open, how should we fix it?

4. Add some introduction and instructions of how to use/read this artist book. It can improve the reader experiences while reading our artist book and figure out how to use it.

I believe that by improving and solving the problems and issues listed above can make our project better than what we have right now, it is important to get feedbacks from others in order to make our works better. I think our group did present our topic clearly than what we planned, which is good, and I appreciate the efforts we put in this 2 week project, and the final work is enjoyed by lots of people.
