Project 3: Observation

Integrative Studio: Project 3

For this project, we are going to do some observation of objects in a space, and we are going to use the objects to show and talk about that space, what happened and how will the object feel. Our group chose to use Barnes & Noble, a bookstore on 14th street Union Square, while the object we chose is the escalator in the bookstore. The escalator is four-floors high, it was built before the bookstore opens, we are going to find out more information about the escalator and the bookstore. By using the object that we observed from that specific space, we will be creating videos and animations based on the chosen object, telling stories about the object itself and also things happening in the space.

First, our group did some simple observation in Barnes & Noble, such as drawing the objects and compositions in the bookstore, some interesting stuffs in the bookstore, and also counting heads that are riding the escalator. These observations are quite easy, but there are a lot of information missing within the space and the object. So we also interviewed the employee in the bookstore, asking about the history of the bookstore. We also get some extra information about the daily of the bookstore, and the busy hours. Then, we decided to interview some consumers in the bookstore, asking how they feel about the escalator. These observations make our overview clearer, and therefore we found our focusing point for this project.

We took photos of the bookstore and record data information in our notebooks, here are some post showing some of my observation, the answer of the interview that our group did is also typed at the end of this post.

Interview(answers about the escalator):
Quick and easy to use.
Efficiently move people up and down even in the crowded hours( Saturday afternoon).
Don’t have to wait in the line.
Never really pay attention to it but useful if I think about it.
Just a escalator, nothing special.
