Project 5: Letter to myself

Letter to myself

Time past and soon it is the end of the semester, you never know how much time you wasted through these months, from a freshmen to finally a student in Parsons.

It is the last week that I am going to spend in this classroom with these classmates, and it is just like a dream, I even thought that yesterday is the first time that we met in this place. However, we spent a wonderful period of time working together, discussing about our ideas and writings, and enjoy the joyfulness of creating and sharing our projects.

My favourite project is the first project that I first made when I came to Parsons, I created an artist books. I am with Susan(my classmate last semester) and she is very helpful, we decided to make something special that I never tried before. We used mirror and reversal words to introduce our theme, how challenging life is and how can we solve the difficulties and problems. I think this theme is a very good start for me because it always reminded me of trying our best to finish our works. However, you should always pay attention to the details in the project even though it is hard for you at the beginning, but you can get a good result only if you tried. You could first do some more research before you start your project—no matter which project—they can train your working and making skills. The processes of doing your work is also very important, don’t forget to record them, these are also the process of you learning and exploring.

On the other hand, you should also spent more time to chat and communicate with your classmates, to learn more things, to understand more thoughts, to accept more opinions. If you miss those things, you won’t have another chance to start over again, and you will gain some regret as me. If there’s more time for me, or another chance to start over again, I will be learning more things from teachers and classmates. Time past quick, we don’t have that much time to plan them all completely, but we can always learn from our past, and improve ourselves in the next semester or year.

I think I did changed a lot. At the beginning, I am mostly concentrating on the artworks and art forms that I like, but through out time, I also look at lots of other people’s artworks that are totally different with my own taste and my understandings. By exploring more and more in art, my perspective also changed, art should be something with containment, that can communicate and convey our emotions, understandings and messages to the audiences. This is the process that I start to create real arts and develop.

Parsons is a good place to study, among classmates and friends, we all have our own ideas and create unique works. While the processes of making our works are also important, teachers in Parsons always focus on our making processes and recording them, this is what I never tried before. In my high school, I always finish the final work first, and then creating such “processes”, feels like making up my ideas. But now, I find out that the processes are very helpful, we can always improve and develop our ideas during the creation of the works, we may change our ideas, change the materials used and even the whole topic twisted to another direction. However, these changes makes our work more interesting and more complete.

This year went past faster than what I thought, but on the other hand, I also learnt and explored a lot. Last but not least, it is important to know that there’s still a long path waiting for us to explore, last but not least, please don’t stop running, if you’re tired, you can walk, but never stop nor return.
