NoHo Zine Draft 1

At first, I was planning on doing my Zine on only theaters in NoHo but after visiting Interface Archive and doing further independent research I decided on looking into the aftermath of gentrification and the impact of the 80s crack epidemic on NoHo today.

I decided that to make sure my photos fit in with photos of the “March Against Crack” that my iPhone photos wouldn’t cut it and I needed to take film photos so I woke up early on Saturday morning and walked around again making sure to get photos of the architecture, cafes, luxury shops, expensive/niche gyms, and construction. I also revisited the main theatre that caught my attention, The Public Theatre. During my first few visits to NoHo, I was unaware of the history of how NoHo was impacted by the Crack Epidemic and I wasn’t looking at the words and slogans on The Public’s banners. Sayings such as “All Are Welcome” are quite ironic considering that during the 80s theaters would physically chain off all their steps so the homeless and drug addicts wouldn’t use these spaces.
