Reading response – Annie Hall (1977)

After watching the film Annie Hall, I found that there are many elements in the film that can represent the 1970s fashion trend. For example at the beginning of the movie that Alvy Singer recalled to what his primary school’s classmates became to when they grew up, and one of his classmates said she is into the leather. At the time, leatherware and fur were expanded rapidly, most of the couture and ready to wear were having the leather product. By the 1970s, the liberated women have broken the stereotype of family women, and be more independent. Also, with the rise of the Women’s Liberation Movement that more women began to have a job, so I think the new social situation has made females became more focused on reality and themselves. People stop seeking for luxury couture and back-to-the-earth has become the trend which was also shown from the fashion garments in the movie. For example, Annie Hall and her family members were wearing the clothes that seem to be made of soft cotton and linen fabrics at the scene when Alvy visited her house, it reflected the trend of return to nature. Throughout the movie, Annie Hall was likely to wear trousers and layered top, her outfit with trousers has shown more than five times, even the scene on the street, there was a woman passing by who was wearing a pair of trousers. It was because the trousers were popular in the mid-1970s, and the trousers were more suitable for the image of independence for women. Also jeans and khaki often appears in the scenes which I think it’s because of women’s liberation from old traditions that women become more casual for wearing.
