In this project we have to create an artwork in response to the object, form or image we chose from our signifiers in our taxonomies.
Signifier that interested me the most- Teddy Bear
Reason for choosing the signifier- Teddy Bears are always associated with girls. A girl sleeping with a Teddy Bear next to her would be assumed as cute, but if a boy does the same he would be considered odd. Teddy’s are always gifted to girls on their birthdays, anniversaries, teddy day. But are never gifted to boys, as boys have toy cars, toy guns, lego to play with.
Questions:
- If the Teddy Bear is wearing clothes associate with males, would it then be acceptable for boys to play with them?
- Is this stigma only for Teddy Bears or other stuffed animals too?
- What was the purpose of the Teddy Bear when it was originally made?
