History of Fashion – Final Paper Synopsis

For the final paper assignment, I chose to write about the Paninaris. The Paninaris were a group of well to do youths that lived in Milan, Italy. The Paninari subculture started in 1980 when the first panini cafe opened in the city of Milan. The Milanese youth would hang out at the local panini cafe as it was a laid back environment where everyone could meet and dress however they wanted. The Paninaris’ signature styles included colored Moncler puffer jackets, Timberland’s, Levi’s 501 Jeans, and Invicta rucksacks to name a few. The subculture was influential in many ways, not only in Italy, but globally as well at the time. Musicians wrote songs about the Paninaris. There were magazines based on the subculture and its fashions. Upcoming designers started their own brands dedicated to the styles of the Paninaris. The vocabulary and slang used by the Paninaris was being used internationally. There were also television shows based on the subculture. Overall, the Paninaris influenced the fashion industry and took credit for their trends and styles.
