+How your research from seminar informed your studio project
My research for seminar included research about individualistic and collectivist cultures and how changing between these two cultures affect a person’s behavior. I also incorporated my own personal experience and related that to the research I found such as how I became more independent from others and didn’t count on others to do something on my own.

Coming here to the United States, I had to learn to adapt to be more individual. And in a way, it helped me build myself and become stronger. I don’t depend on other people anymore, I can do things on my own without having to call my dad every second.
Before coming here, in my IB English class, I remember my teacher asking me to describe myself in an interview I had to give. I remember saying “loyal” and “friendly.” Now, I could easily say I am resourceful, sensitive and persistent. I see this as a good character development and route to becoming independent from others, in a good way. I could definitely see how the shift between two cultures affect my behavior and how I see myself and others.

I came up with the idea of making a zine about cultural differences and how it affects the person because of the mind map I did on Bridge 3. I included family, friends but also the section “How I’m Feeling?” and the first thing that came to my mind was “homesick.” I started thinking about why I felt that way and what differences I came up with and started asking my Turkish friends the same question. I wrote down the first answer they came up with and decided to make a very personal zine about the cultural differences we faced whilst studying in the United States.
I really liked how it turned out overall. I specifically chose to make a small zine because it felt more personal for the subject I was aiming for.
+What you would like to develop further
I would like to incorporate more cultures and make a bigger book out of it to show how each culture can learn from each other because I truly value learning from other people and creating experiences so incorporating more cultures would mean having more to learn about which is always exciting.
