DIDACTIC
Mirrored, 2018
Digital painting, wire
Philadelphia Museum of Art, purchased with funds contributed by the Dietrich Foundation and with the partial gift of the artist and the Paula Cooper Gallery, 1998.
For this exhibition, Paravano created a series of digital paintings accompanied by 3D sculptural works to critique the assumptions made about biracial Americans. With biracialism on the rise, this mixed artist explores how society often treats biracial people as a blank slate that they project their own assumptions onto, always labeling them with an identity opposite to their own. Her digital media acknowledges the contradictory nature of approaching race in a formulaic way. Similarly, her intricate clay work plastered in white further criticizes the blank screen concept.
