WEEK 7: THE PROFANE

Response: The Rise in the Profane

I do agree with the point made that as our society advances – there will be a shift from what has been traditionally understood as sacred. However, I don’t agree that the presence of the profane/the advanced/ the new set of absolutes diminishes or overrides the sacred. Are these two terms/absolutes not cyclical? If something has to go against the sacred to be profane – Would this not just repeat as civilization continues to advance? Is the profane not just a diluted form of the sacred? I’d argue that it is because the profane leaves room for more, especially when in regards to technology. There is sanctity in technology in the same way there is sanctity in rituals – I think the misunderstanding may lie in accessibility.

Response: Twitter taught Microsoft AI’s

This article is definitely eye opening in that it targets fear for advancing technologies that inherently lie within almost everyone. I do think though that the problem lies with the “solution” of injecting human emotion within AI or really any form of technology. The technology we are so adapted to is based on inputs, outputs and various controlled algorithms – all of which is predictive and controlled. To implement a factor in that which is almost completely unpredictable is heinous. Who decides what moral code or form of empathy is right for the job?
