[LS] Sustainable Systems – “Know Your Zone”

I’m very surprised that Sandy’s destructive power, the impact it made to New York city is unprecedented.

I don’t think this city is prepared well for next same disaster because on my personal experience, and I think this city’s urban infrastructure still too old and damaged. The government maybe can fix those impaired pieces of equipment after disasters, but in order to cope with more serious disasters, our city infrastructure should be upgraded and replaced. The reality is that when I take the subway to school every day, the underground transport facilities I see are still ancient.

The replacement of the city’s infrastructure is a very lengthy and costly process, even though the New York government continually working on Infrastructure construction, but in next five years, if we meet the same scale or even bigger disaster again, I don’t think this city’s resistance ability will be better than before. But in another way, because we have the experience from the past. I believe our reaction to the disaster will certainly be faster than before, the transfer of citizen and other properties will be more timely, so the disaster losses of the New York city should be less.

I live in the Jersey city, here belong to the New Jersey, but it near the zone 1. Knowing which zone we located can make us understand when the storm is coming, we may face the different levels of damage. And help us make a judgment that we should evacuate or not. I think Parsons is not located in any zone; it located in a relatively safe position.

I think I am prepared for a hurricane because from the map I can see many locations are clearly located in the different evacuation zone, I will know in what kind of situation I should evacuate when the hurricane is coming. Also, here set up many Accessible Evacuation Center at several places, I can go to the nearest centre if I need.

I think this website designed pretty well, and it shows the information in a clear way, and also support several languages for people, it is beneficial.

  • The new Whitney Museum of Art is located in Zone 1. Next week we will visit the Whitney Museum learn from Museum staff about building’s ability to adapt to climate change. In preparation, please read the following article about the Whitney Museum of Art’s preparation for sea-level rise in New York City. (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. What are three facts that you learned in this article that were the most surprising? What do you think is the most creative aspect of the building’s design?  What are two questions you have about the Whitney’s design and preparation for flooding? ** please note we will talk from Parsons to the Whitney next week. It is just under a mile (should take around 15-20 minutes). Please wear comfortable walking shoes to class and bring an umbrella if needed. You do not need to bring your laptops to class next week.

Whitney museum focuses on the impact of the catastrophic climate, thus designing the appropriate facilities to ensure safety. For example, they built a 15,500-pound door to isolate the floods, while the museum’s lobby is also 10 feet higher than the sea level and it designed to be water-tight against a flood level of 16.5 feet. Whitney learned a lot from the hurricane sandy, and its construction standards were built on the threat posed by sandy. Whitney is the leader in tackling climate change. When people discuss the authenticity of climate change, Whitney has created a full system that can address the effects of climate change, and they set a successful example for other modern art museum and other institutions.

I think the most creative aspect of the building’s design is the combine the fortification system and modern design very well.

I want to ask them about the Whitney is able to withstand flooding caused by hurricanes like the “Irma”. And what is the maximum size of the flooding that the museum can afford?

  • Begin work on your Systems Map or model, due in two weeks.  For this week, start your research on this project. On your LP, name the material you will be mapping/modeling and list 15 of the 20 systems you will include in your final design.  Draft your caption about how this material might be produced differently in 50 years because of how planetary systems are changing. The final map or model is due on September 19th. On the 19th post the file or documentation of your project on your LP and PRINT or bring your model to class for critique.  Be sure to use your own original drawings/graphics/photography, not clip art.

For producing the cashmere fabric, the biggest change during the 50 years is the livestock sector I think. Before the primary format of livestock sector is family-raise, now is industry-raise, the raised scale is much bigger than before. Also, the environment change causes the series impact to the livestock sector, many areas’ forage resources disappear very quickly, resulting in livestock do not have enough food sources.
