Color Research and Writing Exercise.

  1. Black is often considered as the color of mourning and grief in many Western and Mediterranean countries. However, in some Muslim countries it also represents modesty. I personally associate black with the lack of color since I belong to the Shi’ite Muslim sect who mourn the death of Hussain Ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, martyred at the Battle of Karbala, and wear black clothes on the day of the tragedy. It is also associated with Iranian Shi’ite women who wear black chador hijab and cloaks worn by the Ayatollahs, the Shi’ite clergy. Black turbans are worn by male Sayeds, Muslim men who descend from Muhammad through his daughter Fatima and son in law Ali.

  1. Its late in the night and you’re walking back home at brisk pace to avoid any dangerous encounters. A few miles away from your final destination you spot a black cat, angled across your path. You decide to take the risk rather than letting the cat cross, surrendering to the old superstition rooted in legends. Black cats have been subjected to myths for centuries. They’ve been associated with both good and bad luck, depending on the country you live in. The British and Japanese believe it is good luck. In ancient Egypt, cats were treated as royalty and were often worshipped. Pogo, my male black, Persian furry friend has only been a source of love and happiness. Hopefully, one day people will realize that when a black cat crosses your path, its only because the cat has a life is going somewhere.
