‘The Optically Enhanced White Shirt’

This passage reminded me of a very interesting fact I found out from another reading for this class. Working women wore button down t shirts and blazers just to look like men and earn as much as them. The pure white colour of the cloth fulfilled masculine ideals of strictness and only a prosperous person could afford to keep them clean.

Colours helps express the core beliefs of the worlds major religions. White as a colour has different symbolic meanings. For Muslims it’s a colour they wear to funerals, Christians wear it on weddings. The lack of colour gives a soothing and calming effect. It’s so peaceful.

‘Crisp and fresh, signalling strength and independence’, this elaborates on the point I just made above. A wrinkled white button down for me would be very casual and something you could pair with ripped jeans but a crisp, white button down would be very formal and corporate. I’m a huge fan of white shirts and it’s all I wear in the summer, tucking down one side.

I agree with the passage, a white well-pressed shirt does symbolise perfection but reading the effects of the stilbene on the environment, I’m definitely gonna think twice before buying another one.
