Why Fashion Matters

 Skin to Skin

Page 74-75

After watching The True Cost multiple times, I cannot stop myself from thinking about the impact of fashion on people and the planet. Everything we wear or try on has already been touched by someone else. Most of the fast fashion comes from the blood and sweat of the factory workers. There is definitely an intimate relationship between the wearer and the makers. Due to lack of knowledge, convenience and ignorance we as buyers ignore the “true cost”.

Watching the families of the Rana Plaza victims cry made my heartbreak. The buildings owner ignored warnings after cracks had appeared in the building. Approximately 2,500 people were injured with a death toll of 1,134. How low do we as humans have to stoop to ignore the basic human rights of others, especially those who help you generate such revenues.

Factory workers earn so little that an entire month’s wages would not buy a single item they produce. They are physically and verbally abused most of the time. They have long hours and poor health and safety conditions. In order to make a sweater that is sold for $7, the wages would fall drastically. Sales like Black Friday should be boycotted as we don’t consider the efforts put in by the workers and the entire production process.

If I didn’t go to such a progressive university, I don’t think I would have been introduced to the sustainable fashion and the over impact of the fashion industry on the rest of the world.
