Value Figure Composition

Process:

Part 1: Value scale in Illustrator

Creating the scale in illustrator was the easiest part of the project. The gradual changes in shades from white to black were really smooth and interesting somehow.

Part 2: Digital Value Scale

This was perhaps the toughest part of the project for me. I couldn’t find images and textures that would blend well with the first value scale. I had to back and change the brightness for some of them in Photoshop.

Part 3: Hand Drawn Value Scale

First, I made the scale with charcoal and misunderstood this step. After the review in class, I understood what I had to do. Then I created slanted lines with a black marker and imitated the colors of the first two value scales as closely as I could.

My value scale with all three is here:

Part 4: Figure Drawing

During our last figure drawing session in which we did a 20-minute pose, I wasn’t feeling too well and had a midterm presentation due right after class. I couldn’t draw well. Anne suggested I ask a friend to pose for me and do this assignment over the Spring break. This was an amazing opportunity for me to improve as I was going back home for the break. As soon as I landed in Islamabad, I called my art teacher and asked him if I could do two sessions with him. This helped me improve a lot as I drew with pencil first and then went over with charcoal. I also took more than 20 minutes as I added minor details like the eyebrows and the hair.

Part 5: Putting the figure drawing in Photoshop
This was the most time-consuming part of the project as I made different layers for different shadows. My drawing unfortunately didn’t have a background except for the tool so Anne told me to make shadows in Photoshop. We had an option to pick different variations of the value scale. I chose both the hand drawn and the photographic value scales to make it look more abstract yet give a sense of shadow and light.
