Volumetric Casts and Outer Skins

Volumetric Casts-

I used foam board to create the moulds- my shape was a hexagonal prism that was split in half and a third smaller hexagon prism in the middle.

My casting material was wax.

Outer Skin-

The outer skin for my cast was made with left over plastic packaging that was cut and sewn together with thread and a needle.

Reflection-

There were many issues that arised when doing this project. I had ordered wax a few weeks ago to do this project but only got time to properly start it after most of my finals were over and when casting the wax, there was some leakage with the mould and I lost a lot of the wax in the process. I am moving out of the dorms and leaving so I did not have time to order more wax to cast the third volumetric shape. I tried retaping the edges of the mould many times but the wax made it difficult for the tape to adhere properly. In the end, I ended of pouring water over the leakage to solidify the wax which stoped the leaking. For the outer skin, I thought it would be best to create an outer skin for the middle hexagon prism because it was the only full shape. I chose a material like plastic because of how oily wax is and materials like cardboard or paper would not work with wax well.
