Constructed Environments Studio #5: NYC Neighborhoods: Video Reflections

All the neighborhoods represented in the videos show unique qualities that make them very local based neighborhoods with a diverse and social community.  Jackson Heights, Queens is a great melting pot of all cultures, with a heavy influence food culture.  Lots of public transportation runs through the neighborhood along with being close to the airports, makes it a hub from people stretching out in many directions.  Red Hook, Brooklyn on the other hand, does not have the easiest transportation, and has a diverse community of artists and builders alike.  Neighborhood has gone through many struggles of job loss and hurricane destruction, but times like those only form a tighter nit community.  Harlem is an area of Manhattan deeply rooted with African American culture in New York, as well as the stage for the Harlem Renaissance music scene.  East Harlem is an extension of Harlem that contains a lot of Latino and Italian music and culture.  Yorville is a uniquely cheap neighborhood for being in Manhattan due to its lack of subway access, but is a very safe and beautiful area that is very family friendly.  Crown Heights, Brooklyn has a long history of social problems between Jewish and African American neighborhoods, and have sparked tensions over the years.  This has changed as the are has a lot of new diversity and social change.  I will be looking at Crown Heights with the standard of personal interest as I am looking at neighborhoods in Brooklyn to live in when my lease is up, and Crown Heights offers a large community with a long history and accessibility through the green subway line.
