Task 2: Reflection of personal thoughts of “shadow cities”

To me, a shadow city is a term used to describe a physical place where a sense of nostalgia accompanies every visit because important factors have changed. In documenting New York as a shadow city, it was difficult because I had no previous impression of New York to compare to. Being a foreigner to the country, my version of this shadow city was to engage with the sense of nostalgia from the point of view of what I thought New York would be at that time. It triggers memories of being in taxi’s going from the airport to hotels at 4 am, eating chicken wings and pizza as a dinner/breakfast to fuel a trip to the toy store in a few hours.

New York as a palimpsest:

As you walk along this path the city distractions will tell you how the area has grown. What influences the people have had on the variation of services available, the path marking around monument sites. As I understand it, my route displayed an archive of physical interests and needs the user of the area has had. The buskers performing the songs they believe the crowd will prefer from the radio is directly influenced. The use of road barricades as seats is reflective of the  method of adaptation citizens have.
