Block Problem + Orthographic Drawings

This series began with the idea of how we use building blocks to construct spaces and shapes. A building block is often thought of as a solid static piece that one uses, along with more blocks, to create a larger structure. I wanted to give a single block the capacity of many.

I began my work bu exploring how 2D shapes transform in to 3D forms. I considered how forms of different natures are deconstructed. How organic, geometric, and a combination of both forms can be manipulated to construct a completely new shape.

I cut, carved, and sanded each individual piece into the desired form, added a finishing oil, drilled a 1/2 inch diameter hole through each, sliced the shapes, and placed a metal pipe through the holes. Each piece can now be manipulated to form any shape one pleases.
