Bridge 3: Multiple Perspectives

For our Bridge 3 in Int. Studio: Fake we created a tableaux vivant of René Magritte’s painting “The Lovers”. I contributed with the conceptual part of this project as well with the creating of the props. Our props mainly consisted of painted cardboard and tights filled with cotton to create our fake people for the video. In this images you can see them:

We changed the story behind the painting drastically. At first sight, the original painting is very subtle and sweet, a couple kissing each other naturally inspires love and kindness. But their covered faces allow a sense of mystery to the viewer, and from there we got inspired. We created a tragic, horrific story behind a subtle and sweet painting. Our tableaux vivant consists of a horror film where the characters from the original painting are on a date which ends up in the girl killing the guy. This tableaux vivant might be interpreted in many ways, as a social commentary on blind dates, on how love blinds you, or how you never get to know someone for real. Any way our video might be interpreted its going to be quite different from how the original artwork is.

Original by René Magritte.
