ARTIST STATEMENT : Artist Statement-vp99nd
In this final project, I explored an idea and created a project that expresses the corresponding research. I studied street art and graffiti in the Lower East Side in Manhattan. I went out to explore the streets to document and study the works that coat the walls. I noted the location–cross street and the neighboring businesses and landmarks to compare the effect that the artwork has on the area.
After, I created a map to indicate the cross-streets of the designated artworks. I narrowed down my selection from twenty shots to three shots. I looked into these three shots further. I noted the artist, artist’s biography, type of work shared, etc. The three works of art include Jerkface’s “Untitled,” Buff Monster’s “NYC 2016,” and “Secret Walls X L.I.S.A. PROJECT 2016” done by Team Lamour Supreme and Team Crash. I cut out doors into my map to create a user experience with the viewer. When the door is closed, the artwork is hidden and hard to find because the exterior is continuous as a map to blend in with the work. However, when you open the door, there is a QR code on the inside of the door that redirects the viewer to a text page with full info about the work of art and its corresponding artist. Then, the viewer gets a peek or preview of the artwork when opening in the door. This 2D piece has a 3D element to invite the viewer’s interest.
