Platformer Elements – Week 5

13 More Tips for Making a Fun Platformer

     – Discuss how these elements may or may not relate to the game you’re developing

I find these tips very helpful when thinking about what I want my players to be able to do while playing my platformer. I want to include lava/fire elements so I think if I happen to have a lava pit below the camera I will add a red glow and little bits of lava appearing on camera (Tip 9). I also do want to include a double-jump flying feature so I agree that the user should be able to double jump no matter their height (Tip 6). I want the user interface of my game to be really easy for the player to read over while also staying within the same design of mayan culture (Tip 13).

Platforming Game 101: Running, Jumping and More

     – Discuss a precedent for your game. How are they similar and how are they different?

When thinking about how my game is going to work out, Super Mario Bros is definitely a game that comes to mind. I was obsessed with Super Mario Bros. 3 growing up so it is the platformer I have the most practice with in terms of having the mechanics of the game down. I want to include a power up where you can have more of a flying feature, with some snazzy wings, similar to the leaf power up in Super Mario Bros. 3.  I also feel like I want to incorporate elements from a game I used to play on my PS2 called Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves (The Sly Cooper Series is mentioned in the article!). Sly is a stealth platform game that incorporates special elements that relate to being a sneaky fox. I want my platformer to incorporate special elements like being able to fly and being able to sneakily hang upside down. Sly includes elements like being able to hide behind objects and walk over tightropes. My game will not be a stealth game about a fox, but I do want to include some sneaky elements inspired by Sly.
