Space & Materiality Multi-Tool

The tool I made is called the Makeup Multi. It’s a handheld tool with multiple brushes for different makeup applications. It’s complete with an overall eyeshadow blending brush, a mascara wand, a medium shading brush, and a crease blending brush. And also, a holder on the side for a pair of tweezers. The tool also comes with a stand to hold up eyeshadow palettes, which offers maximum convenience to the user during the makeup process. It makes it easier for whoever is using it to switch between brushes without having to constantly pick one up and set down the other, and to also declutter a vanity. This tool is perfect for any makeup lover, beginner to master, its easy for everyone to use!

My process of making the tool began with drawing inspiration from the world around me. I realized I wanted to create the tool as I was doing my eyeshadow, and how I hate constantly switching between brushes while doing my makeup. I wanted something where they could all be in one place at my convenience. I began to think of how I could do this, and was reminded of a Swiss Army knife and the concept of many things compressed into one that can easily fold out. I sketched some ideas and soon came to the concept that was the Makeup Multi.

I borrowed a thin sheet of wood from my suite-mate and began working on the tool. I soon found I wouldn’t be able to join the wood for the structure with just wood glue, so I carefully and precisely cut out the pieces into a finger joint type of mechanical connecting. Next, I cut out the pieces that would connect the brushes to the dowel on the main piece. I used a drill to make holes through the four pieces of wood and connected them all to the dowel. I hit a small bump in the creation once I realized I hadn’t had enough room to fit the tweezers into the tool. After brainstorming, I decided to instead add a pocket for them to the outside and put a mascara wand in where the tweezers were supposed to go. I lastly painted the tool a fun purple color that caught my eye. I also created a stand for eyeshadow palettes to rest on with the extra wood I had and some wood glue, which I painted white. If I were to make the tool again and do anything differently, I would probably just make it a bit cleaner and sand down some edges even more. And also, add primer underneath the paint so it didn’t sink into the wood.

I photographed this tool in the bedroom environment, at a desk/vanity, in the hands of my roommate, while she was doing her makeup. I feel as if this is the best environment for the use of my tool, as many people don’t typically do their makeup on the go. It shows it exactly as I intended it to be used.
