New Museum: Trigger Show

The “Trigger Show” at the New Museum featured primarily pieces that really pushed the definition of abstract art.  Each piece was unique and brought something interesting to the show.  In addition, all the pieces were quite large, the main exhibits being placed at the center of each room.  I found all the main exhibits to be quite absorbing.  However, the piece that struck me the most was Ektor Garcia’s “Cuiloni”.  This piece was a series of smaller assembled scenes based on Garcia’s memories.

The piece was striking to me because of both the concept behind it and the organization that it presents. In addition, it doesn’t feel like any space on the exhibition is wasted, all the pieces that make up the exhibition seem to have a story to tell, and considering that the exhibition is so large, it seems like there’s quite an interesting story to tell.  In addition, all the individual pieces on the assembly look incredible.  It seems like every single piece has a purpose, looks unique and when put together, feels natural.

Given that this piece is based on real memory, it feels like there is even more weight to it than there would be otherwise.  There is also a real sense of authenticity to each piece and that is ultimately, one of the key reasons why I really like this piece.  The piece is also open to interpretation as the artist doesn’t explain what piece means what and so it’s a piece for the viewer to think about and leaves questions for the viewer to find out themselves.
