Bridge V: Reflection (Seminar)

Integrative Seminar, as an overall class, was a challenge, but was certainly one I was up for, and am glad I undertook.  I feel it has helped me make my writing

Bridge IV had the students re-imagine a monument in an assigned area in New York City (in my case, the Octagon at Roosevelt Island).  We were to propose an “installation” or a “temporary monument” and that would commemorate something about the island.  I proposed a potential Virtual Reality experience in Roosevelt Island that took the player through the Octagon during its time as Blackwell Asylum.  To get the account of Blackwell Asylum during its opening, I took inspiration from Nellie Bly’s book “10 Days in a Madhouse”, which was about a woman who visited Roosevelt Island.

Bridge 4 really was extremely interesting because for the first time this semester, it finally gave me a chance to propose a piece in a medium that I had a lot of personal interest in, as well as familiarity with.  The major I am taking is Design and Technology, and my interest when it comes to what direction I want to take my major is Game Design.  I had a great time actually imagining what the game might look like in development, as well as what it would look like when it was done.  However, I also learned that there was more to developing a potential VR experience than just creating a stage, interactive pieces, scripted moments, and sounds.  I learned that each decision made has a purpose, and if purpose is not included, then the whole piece will fall apart, and that feeling of having a substantial amount of content in a project that I’ve been working on for a long time, is something I see a lot in my future, and is a great feeling.
