Bridge 5 (Reflection + Presentation) | Cross-Course Reflection

My Name is Montis Songsombat, my major is Fashion Design.

•What themes and working methods emerge in several courses?

Through out the courses, a lot of the themes revolved around helping others, or designing new innovations that would better the quality of life. There were not any working methods that emerged in the courses but to manage time wisely.

•What skills did you learn in one course that you utilized in another?

I did not learn any hands on skills through out this year, but I was able to practice with what I already had and improved on it. However if it was a skill that I recently learned, it would be the craft of research.

•What connections do you see between your academic studies and studio making?

Research between the studies and studio go hand in hand, without studies the studio projects tend to have no meaning and would become merely another object created.

•What made some projects/ papers more exciting? What did you enjoy most about these?

In the first semester I didn’t really enjoy much of the projects given because it had nothing to do with want I want to do on a creative bases. Once I received more fashion related projects, I became more engaging.

•When could further research have helped? What about making/writing?

Further research helps me understand my topic more, it helps me as a designer to delve into a more creative and conceptual aspect where the this certain mindset could not be achieved without research.

Highlight 1: Gesture Drawing: Drawing/Imaging Class

Gesture drawing is a skill development where we undergo short 60 seconds exercises to draw the gestures made by a live model.

Gesture drawing helped me understand the fluidity of the human gesture and how to approach it through drawing in a short period of seconds.

Highlight 2: Bridge 4: Intergrated Studio 2

In bridge four I started the brain storm phase by looking back into my past experiences, what was personal to me and what my pass had to offer. I chose the topic that appealed most to me which was the military that I participated in during my high school years. The next steps to completing the project was very straight forward, to design, choose material, create the pattern, cut out, sew and lastly documentation.

This highlight represents the work that I have been thriving to create all year but haven’t gotten the chance to. However, at the same time If I didn’t go through first and second semester I would not have been able to produce or come up with this project. The most successful thing I learned from this work is the attention to details, since the coat is so minimal, every details matters because if something is off it jeopardizes the image of the coat and the flaw could be clearly seen.

In the future, I hope to continue on the path of fashion, I hope to grow creatively and find myself and my identity as a creative designer. I also hope to hone in on my skills of production whether its sewing, pattern making or even sketching.
