‘Parallel Universe’ Image:

For this project, I photographed my friend, Penny, as she gets ready to leave her dorm. In the images, I emphasize the routine interactions between herself, her belongings, and her space that defines her identity. For many women, including Penny, this routine becomes ritualistic, and essential for survival against the pressure to conform. This series of images celebrates the romance and beauty of non-conformity, as well as the formation of identity and self-actualization that occurs within the walls of a girl’s bedroom.

In the ‘Parallel Universe’ image, I draw from Penny’s style inspiration of ‘club kid’ culture and transport her to that space. The background image was taken at legendary NYC nightclub, Studio 54, featuring an endless sea of disco balls. I mirrored this effect by creating a pattern out of the mirror Penny is pictured holding in order to connect the two worlds. The image is a surreal union of Penny’s dreamworld and its translation into her reality and identity.
