Project 5: Drift

Sketchbook Spread:

Idea Board:

Final Piece:

The location I am mapping is Souk Al-Safat in Kuwait City, a fabric market that I have visited a lot throughout all stages of my life. This piece will be an ode to the Souk and its significance to both my cultural and creative identities. The inspiration images referenced are of fabrics and other materials from the souk itself, a photo of the Souk which I have taken, and a map of the Souk.

To create the piece, I overlayed floral fabrics onto the image of the Souk using photoshop, and then had it printed on 11×14 stretched canvas. I then traced the map of the Souk using oil pastels on mylar paper, and pinned it over the image onto the canvas. Over the mylar paper and through the canvas I pinned a square piece of the plastic bag fabric I have purchased from the market came in, and the receipt for the fabric to emulate fabric samples. These materials have come straight from the location I am referencing, which adds to the feeling of authenticity I am prioritizing in this piece.
