“Erasure” draws from the censorship of women in Arab media. It is a response to the claim that this censorship is enforced to respect Arab cultural norms and values. The media in the center of the piece, pictured to the left, is a Kuwaiti magazine from 1955, reflective of Arab culture at the time. Censorship is not in our history. It holds no place in our traditions or values. It is instead, succumbing to the motives of religious extremists that have infultrated and corrupted our governments. The piece reimagines the erasing of culture and expression that has occurred at the hands of today’s Arab governments.
