Bridge 1

At the first class of studio, I brought a pearl ring. The spiral gold design with two different sized pearls on the bottom and top made me say ‘Hmm’ at first glance, so I bought it without thinking in the store. Then I realized I had specific obsession with pearls, so I decided to explore them more through this project.

I got my inspiration from this painting, “The Birth of Venus”, by Sandro Botticell in the mid 1480s. In the picture, Venus is portrayed naked on a shell on the seashore and this made me think of the relationship between women and pearls. Are women originally made of pearl in ancient fairy tales? I decided to make a video to explore the senses of a woman with pearls.

I took the video in my friend’s apartment, which has a nice bathtub. It evokes a feeling of the shell in the painting. I ask my model to set in the bathtub and play with the pearls spontaneously. The love women have of peals is a natural expression that I didn’t realize before. So I took the video with different body parts of the model with pearls.

I took a clip of a hand to show how a woman spontaneously plays with pearls sensuality.

The collarbone is a beautiful part of a woman’s body. I wanted it to juxtapose with pearls in my video to show the smooth side of a woman.

This is a chest with pearls. It might seem seductive but I think pearls can express the feeling of being treasured.

The shape of mouth is like the shape of the shell. This sense shows a peal comes out woman’s mouths is like coming out from a shell.

I like how pearls roll with the model’s feet when her feet are moving. It seems like the pearls are alive.

The texture of silk and the texture of pearl is a perfect match. I decided to put them together to show the softness.

When pearls are under water, they appear to return to their origin. They look shinny and textured.
